+The source graphic for this tote is courtesy of ONE Archives at the USC Libraries. it was taken from a poster created by San Franciscans Against Proposition 6 in 1978.
"When your rights are on the ballot get your body in the booth. Register to vote today."
California Proposition 6, sponsored by John Briggs, a conservative state legislator from Orange County, and better known as the Briggs Initiative, was the first attempt to restrict the rights of lesbian and gay Americans by popular referendum. It was a ballot initiative put to a referendum on the California state ballot in the November 7, 1978 election. The failed initiative sought to ban gays and lesbians from working in California's public schools.
